Questions

Plain answers to common questions.

How often should my system be serviced?

Most makers recommend a check once a year for heating and once for cooling, ideally before each season starts. Your unit’s manual says what its maker recommends.

How often should I change the air filter?

It depends on the filter and the home. Many need changing every one to three months, and more often with pets or heavy use. Check the label on the filter, and look at it monthly.

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Common causes include a dirty filter, a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit, a blocked outdoor unit, or ice on the lines. Check the filter and the thermostat first. If it still blows warm air, turn it off and call for service.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away, and don’t switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out. Once you’re outside, call 911 or your gas company.

Should I repair or replace my system?

Age, how often it breaks down and how well it keeps the house comfortable all matter. A technician can look at it with you and explain the options, and the choice is yours.

What size system does my home need?

It depends on more than square footage: insulation, windows, sun and layout all matter. A proper load calculation, often called a Manual J, sizes a system to the house.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm?

If your home has fuel-burning heat, a gas stove or an attached garage, yes. Put one near the bedrooms, test it monthly, and replace it when its maker says to. Many states also require them.
