Questions

Plain answers to common questions.

Where is my main water shut-off?

Usually where the water line enters the house, often in the basement, a crawl space or near the water heater. Find it before you need it, and make sure it turns.

What should I do first if a pipe bursts?

Shut off the main water valve. If water is near outlets or appliances, stay out of it, and switch off that circuit at the panel only if you can reach it safely. Then call a plumber.

Why is there no hot water?

On an electric heater, check the breaker. On a gas heater, the pilot light may be out; follow the instructions on the heater’s label. If you smell gas, leave the house and call from outside.

How can I keep pipes from freezing?

Keep the heat on, even when you’re away, and let taps on outside walls drip on the coldest nights. Open cabinet doors under those sinks, and disconnect garden hoses before winter.

Why does my drain keep clogging?

Hair, soap and grease are the usual causes, and a drain strainer helps. Chemical drain cleaners can harm some pipes, so it’s worth calling about a drain that keeps coming back.

How often should a boiler or furnace be checked?

Most makers recommend a check once a year, ideally before the heating season. It’s also a good time to test your carbon monoxide alarms.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house right away, and don’t switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out. Once you’re outside, call 911 or your gas company.
